Let Me Introduce You To…Robert Dennis Wilson

I first met Robert Dennis Wilson at one of my own book signings. He came to me and told me about two book  projects he’d been working on for a better part of his adult life and was just really excited about the prospects of both. Well, after the grueling process of blood, sweat, and tears….both of his fantastic new books have been published and are awaiting the masses to discover them. So, I wanted to be sure to do my part and let you guys know about Bob and his books.
Here’s a brief bio:
Robert Dennis (Bob) Wilson resides in Florida with his wife, Joyce, and their long-haired Finnish Spitz, Lady. They have four married children and five grandsons, scattered from coast to coast.
Besides writing novels and poetry and being an avid reader, Bob is a singer-songwriter and a scroll saw artist. He works full time telecommuting from home as a Programmer/Report Designer for an international transportation corporation. Both his career and hobbies keep him in an environment which he loves, because he thrives on creativity.
Before meeting the love of his life, Bob actually received a BABE degree in college: that is, a “Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Education” from Washington Bible College, Lanham, MD. He has worked in various support roles for churches, missions, and para-church organizations. Bob continues to have an active role in his current church.
The first novel I wanted to share with you is the first book in the “Earth: The Arena” series and is called “The Players”.  Here’s what the book’s about:
This exciting Sci-Fi novel overflows with inter-dimensional visitors, psychic experimentation, threats of inter-dimensional warfare, disappearing people, lots of action, and enough romance to keep it interesting.

Professor Horace Thompson and his team have just successfully completed a world-changing experiment in the newly legitimized science of Parapsychology. Using electronic devices that boost the mind’s weak ESP signals, they successfully communicated thoughts over a distance of 56 miles.

Suddenly their world changes even more. Their experiment opens a crack between dimensions and the form of a huge god-like alien temporarily materializes in front of them. Before he disappears, this apparently peaceful being informs them that his advanced race, the “Teachers”, desires to not only once again assist mankind, as they have in the ancient past, but to also support them against their common interdimensional enemy.

What does it all mean? Two ancient and diametrically opposed alien civilizations have for millennia chosen the planet Earth to be the ideological arena where they confront each other. One side champions Law and a society based on unchanging Absolutes; the other promotes Liberty, License, and Free Choice. Throughout the ages of Man, we, like unsuspecting pieces on a chess board, have been chosen to be the PLAYERS in their deadly game. But a change is taking place, one which will force every inhabitant of Earth to choose active membership in one side or the other. The alien Overlords are suddenly moving out of the shadows and our planet is about to become the devastated battleground – the Arena – where they will openly face each other in final and ultimate conflict. And God help the human who gets in their way or who chooses the wrong side!

His second book I wanted to share with you is from The Dragonsback Trilogy and is called “The Poison of Thorns.” Here’s what it’s about:

THE POISON OF THORNS: The Dragon’s Back Book 1″ unfolds as an intriguing and action-packed Fantasy with bards, dragons, swords, and mysterious black-robed villains lurking in the shadows.

The Dragonsback Trilogy is a tale about frustrated vengeance and the poison that fills the lives of all who gather and hold dear the toxic thorns of bitterness. The story of two young brothers unfolds ten years after they are orphaned under tragic and mysterious circumstances. To deal with their continual unresolved pain they each choose separate paths and then come to believe that their sibling is in mortal danger because of his chosen path. Both boys find themselves in a strange world surrounded with many questions and it becomes their individual quests to find the answers.

Why were they locked away in an out-of-the way orphanage for ten long years, when they had living kin who would gladly have claimed them? Who are the sinister black-robed “Dragonmen” and what is their hidden agenda. And why are these blackrobes so interested in the two teenaged brothers that they would mobilize all of their considerable resources to possess them?

What is the significance of the shape of their isolated continent? Is it true that it appears to be a gigantic Dragon floating above the endless depths? Is there any truth to the rumors that man-sized, almost invisible dragons are stalking their nights?

And finally, who are the mysterious followers of the mythical Gryphon? Why do they alone, of all the diverse peoples of Dragonsback, have the ability to swim in the dark bottomless waters that surround their land? And most importantly, is the mysterious Swimmer who took part in the deaths of the boy’s parents still available… for retribution?

Well, I was so excited that Bob got these books published, I sat down and asked him a few questions about his writing, his life, and his faith. Here’s what he had to say:

1) You’ve just released your debut novels…two books in two different series…almost simultaneously. That’s pretty impressive and seems like a lot of hard work. Why don’t you give us a rundown of both your books and both your series as a whole? Fill my readers in on what they should expect from these books.
The “Earth – The Arena” series revolves around a group of scientists, who, in bringing legitimacy to the long maligned field of Parapsychology by merging it with hard science [as is done in Dan Brown’s “The Lost Symbol”], find they have opened themselves up to contact with a powerful alien race. Are these beings from another dimension too good to be true or are they exactly what they say they are – the long lost benefactors of humanity? The “Teachers” warn of a powerful despotic enemy who for millennia has kept the two races separated by blocking all of the physical portals between the universes. As the alliance rebuilds, so does the threat posed by this unseen interdimensional foe. Mankind is forced to choose which side it will follow as the events move toward an ultimate and final conflict, with earth at its center.
“The Dragon’s Back Trilogy” drops the reader into an isolated continent the exact shape of an immense dragon floating on the cold depths of a bottomless ocean. The non-mechanized bardic cultures that populate this strange land must all face the question, just how real is that dragon? The story focuses on the lives of two orphaned brothers who have been held prisoner in an “orphanage” for ten long years as they are finally released and follows their separate quests for answers into cause of their parents’ deaths. Each are scarred from the event they witnessed and each caries arm-length poisonous thorns in their packs, marked with the words “The Swimmer,” the individual they believe responsible. Sinister forces move to manipulate the brothers and keep them separated and eventually they become polar opposites, whose ultimate goals can only be fulfilled in the rescuing of the other.
2) Where did the inspiration come for Earth: The Arena? How did the book take shape?
The original concept for the “Earth: The Arena” series dates back to my college days – in 1969! I have literally been writing this series for my entire adult life. As I have grown, so have the contents of the series: at first I thought I could contain it in a single volume, but now I know it will take at least four books to tell it all. In 1991 I attended my first Writers’ Conference (with a much abbreviated version of the novel) and walked away with their highest honor, the “Alpha Award”: granted to the most promising new author of Christian fiction. Thus encouraged by acceptance from my peers, I began writing in earnest and sought to better my skills.
My goal in this series has always been to grab the attention of those who accept the New Age teaching about the godhood of man; those who believe that mankind is evolving toward psychic maturity, where “gifted” individuals will have supernatural abilities. Then take my audience on an action-packed thrill ride though an apocalyptic future, which roughly follows the events prophesied in the Scriptures.
This last year I did a complete rewrite of “THE PLAYERS”, updating its science and doing an extensive amount of additional research into my subject matter. The results have been a story with a lot more depth, credibility and action, with characters hampered by realistic limitations, doubts and flaws.
3) How does The Dragonsback series differ from other fantasy novels? How are they similar? What would you like people to carry away after reading these books?
The Dragonsback Trilogy grew out of a devastating event in the life of my family a couple of decades back: a powerful “Christian Leader” relentlessly destroyed a fledging ministry in which we were fully involved, because it did not measure up to his private definition of orthodoxy. Suddenly bereft of support and robbed of what we thought was “God’s will”, I and others in my family fell into despair and struggled with a weight of bitterness at the perceived wrong that had been done to us. I reverted to secular employment and a malaise continued in our collective lives for many months, until a Christian lady, wise in the ways of Spiritual Warfare, saw our need and counseled us individually. She helped us to see that if we let the sun set on unresolved bitterness, we were giving a foothold in our lives to the powers of darkness [Ephesians 4:26-27]. Our lives were liberated and transformed by the truths she shared.
My oldest son, Joshua, a teenager at the time, came up with the concept of a society living on the back of a deceptively quiet, but very real immense dragon, as a way of visualizing the life lessons we had shared. Together though many brain-storming sessions we constructed the realities of this new world, as an illuminated shadow of our own. In a land where the only flowing water source is the venom of the dragon, what is a righteous man supposed to drink?
The Dragonsback series, which grew out of those times of sharing, is unapologetically Christian in its nature and scope. “The Poison of Thorns” exposes in the life of its characters the toxic effects of gathering the thorns of bitterness and reveals how there is a Savior, who was Himself thorn-pierced to bring liberty and freedom to any and all who will let Him take their burdens. Like other fantasies, action and adventure abound; there are sword fights and dragons and soldiers of a sinister black-robed army lurking in the shadows. There is also a tongue-in-cheek sense of humor that underlies everything in the story you read, poking sometimes subtle other times openly sarcastic fun at the world the readers call home.
4) Who/what are your greatest influences as a writer? (i.e. TV shows, movies, other authors?)
One of my profs at Bible College, Dr David Johnson, infused into me a love of the Scriptures and a willingness and tools required to question Anything and come up with my own conclusions. Authors who influenced me were Christian philosophers Francis Schafer and Clive Staples Lewis, allegorist John Bunyan, J. R. R. Tolkien, Frank Peretti, and the grand master of Science Fiction, Mary Alice (Andre) Norton. Also, I must mention spiritual warfare author, Dr. Neil Anderson, whose “The Bondage Breaker” and other works were the materials used to help free my family from “The Poison of Thorns.”
5) Besides writing, what are some of your hobbies and interests? What do you do for fun and in your spare time?
I love singing in our church’s excellent choir [which is larger than some of the congregations where I have worshipped in the past]. I am a singer-song writer, who loves to set Scripture to music. Many of the songs in the Dragonsback novels have actual music to go with them; perhaps someday these will get posted to my webpage. I also am a scroll saw artist, creating intricate 3-D plaques and portraiture.
6) What are you currently working on now? What can readers expect to see from you in the future?
Hopefully I will have the second novel in the Dragonsback series, “MY BROTHER’S KEEPER,” out within the next month. My artist friend, Julie Grace, has already sent me several very interesting covers!
7) If you could only give one piece of advice to writers everywhere, what would it be?
Attend writers’ conferences! They are a source of inspiration, instruction, and networking that will help you hone your craft.
Thanks, Bob, for a great interview! I wish you the very best of luck in your endeavors. And I hope some of you will help support Bob by checking out his books.
And while I’m at it, I wanted to be sure to announce that my newest book SIRENS’ SONG (the second book in the ENIGMA Directive series) is finally available on the Amazon Kindle, as well as various ebook formats via Smashwords! It will be available in print some time in January! Just letting you know. 🙂

  1. Wonderful interview. As the digital artist for both of Bob's published works, I must say, he has been a delight to work with. He is such an inspiration of both artistic endeavor and Christian faith. His writing has an interesting flavor to it which will leave you intrigued until the last page comes to a close. I look forward to a long and exciting business relationship.
