"Let’s Judge a Book by Its Cover!" Survey

You’ve heard the old expression. “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” But you and I both know that that
is precisely what we do. And you know what? I’m not apologizing for it. By looking at a cover, I get a sense of what the story is about. What the mood of the story will be like. What to expect from the pages of the book. Additionally, the amount of time, effort, energy, and talent a publisher/author puts into designing a cover also tells me a little something about the time, effort, energy, and talent used to create the story within the pages as well. Of course, this test isn’t one hundred percent accurate. We’ve all been surprised by reading a book we didn’t think we like because of a horrible cover, only to find out it’s wonderful. And vice versa. “With a cover THIS good, the story has to be great!” we say. Only to discover that sometimes, the age old adage is indeed correct.
But that’s beside the point. Covers are just amazing to look at. There’s something blissful about going to a bookstore and just perusing their selection of book covers. It’s my own form of gazing at wonderful masterpieces in an art museum. I can look at book covers all day long! I love them.
So, I came up with the idea to do this little survey. I asked a group of avid readers on Facebook (friends of mine from a wonderful Book Club there) to nominate their favorite book covers. I told them to choose the covers that would just compel them to buy the book whether they were fans of the author or not. I received an amazing list of covers, let me tell you! But I also added a few of my own favorite covers in the mix as well. I won’t say which ones though. Don’t want to bias you in your decisions. However, let me share one little caveat with you. There’s a couple of covers in this list that are either my own or from a Seven Realms title. Please know that I did NOT nominate any of my own books (or that of Seven Realms). These were legitimately nominated by other people. Readers like you who not only enjoy great stories, but great cover art as well.

[FYI, sorry about the weird sizes of the covers. the survey app I used to create this thing didn’t allow me an option of making all the images a uniform size. My OCD is screaming right now! lol I tried to correct this problem for two hours and couldn’t get it right. So for the sake of sanity, ya’ll will just have to make due. 🙂 ]

Here’s the rules. Just scan through the images of book covers and click the one(s) you like best. If I did this survey right, you should be able to pick up to five book covers. When you’re finished, it will give you he results so far. Then, on February 25 or 26th, I’ll reveal the top five covers, as well as the number one favorite cover among this list.
So click away! And feel free to share this with your friends. The more, the merrier!

  1. Curious as to how many were influenced as much if not more by the books & authors they liked as much as the actual cover design. Sometimes it is difficult to separate them.
