Last week, I shared with you my plan to focus much of my writing on Ezekiel Crane and the Dark Hollows. I told you how the third book in the Dark Hollows Mystery trilogy will be released late 2016, and how that will conclude this particular arcane mystery, but it doesn’t conclude the mysteries of Boone Creek or Ezekiel Crane by a long shot. I also might have hinted at some possible surprises to be looking forward to. Well, today, I wanted to share with you Phase One of my Dark Hollows/Ezekiel Crane plans with everyone.
It all starts with the re-release of The Curse of One-Eyed Jack. 2016 marks the fifth anniversary of the book’s original publication. So to celebrate, I’ve decided to do a few things to make it special. First and foremost, the book is getting a major editorial over-haul. Not only will many of the typos, etc. that have plagued me since its original release be fixed, but I’m going to add all new scenes, include previously cut scenes that no one has seen before, and maybe a few more surprises to boot.
Now many of my author peers are going to cringe when they see that I’ve told you all this. They’d say, “But Kent, if you tell them this now…before it’s time to re-release the book…then no one’s going to buy One-Eyed Jack.” My response to them would be this: I can truly say One-Eyed Jack is a GREAT story. I love it with all my heart. But it has its flaws. Typos. Continuity issues with the other books. It needs to be fixed. Readers can do perfectly well with the story as it is now, but I sure would hate for them to spend money on this book while I knew a newer, better edition was soon to be released. I’d feel terrible about that. The difference, of course, is that many of these writers do so full time. It puts food on the table for their families. Every dime counts. For me, I have a full time job. I write, not because I have to, but because I love it (but the extra money certainly doesn’t hurt!).
Point is, The Curse of One-Eyed Jack will be re-released sometime in the early part of 2016. It will be ‘new and improved’, as they say. So even if you’ve read it before, it might be a great time to consider re-reading. Also, if you have the book on your Kindle device, it will automatically update to the new edition when it’s available! (As long as you have the ‘auto-update’ feature turned on in the settings of your device).
Finally, all of the books will be getting brand spanking new covers! I absolutely adored the previous covers designed by Danish artist Christian Guldager. But I thought, with the fifth anniversary of the series, they needed a new look. Especially with more books coming after the initial trilogy. So, I decided to redo the covers…and here they are!
What do you think? I couldn’t be more proud of these. They’re decidedly different than the original, but I think they capture the feel of all three books wonderfully. I hope you like them as much as I do!
Finally, be on the look out this year for an all new Ezekiel Crane short story that will bridge the six month gap between The Curse of One-Eyed Jack and The Dirge of Briarsnare Marsh.
I’m so excited about the upcoming Year of the Hollars! Are you? Let me know how you feel about this series and my plan to devote much of my focus on it. I truly want to hear from you. Thanks!
