Quoth Publications, Seven Realms, Thrillers, Mysteries, and Books Galore…

23659332_1799074773726169_2932264253394302156_nIt’s been a few weeks since I last posted. Waiting on some interviews to get back to me is part of the reason. The other is simply a matter of time. I’ve been busy. Busy at my day job and busy with writing and publishing. The former isn’t good. The latter definitely is. So I thought I’d spend a few minutes sharing with you a few bits of news about some upcoming things.

The first thing is no secret. I’m in the beginning stages of starting a brand new publishing company with my partner, NY Times bestselling author David L. Golemon of the excellent EVENT Group series. For those who don’t know, this isn’t my first time owning and operating a publishing company. I used to run Seven Realms Publishing, which published books by awesome indie authors such as Sean Ellis, Rick Chesler, David Sakmyster, William Meikle, and Jeremy Robinson. Had a few not-so indie authors in the stable as well. I originally published David Golemon’s The Supernaturals until St. Martin’s picked it up. I also convinced one of my favorite mystery puzzle book authors (and one of the writers for TV’s Monk), Hy Conrad, to branch out into his own series of mystery novels, which brought about Rally ‘Round the Corpse (An Amy Abel Mystery), which is now published by Kensington under the title Toured to Death (An Amy’s Travel Mystery).

51aPOSAEXQLI’m proud to say that Seven Realms was actually a huge success. And therein was the problem. 7R (as it was affectionately referred to by fans) was a one-man operation. I was the one man. And while I was good at the creative stuff and the marketing and book design, etc, I was not business savvy enough for all the boring business-ey stuff that a company like that needed. When royalty time came around, I was always a nervous wreck. When tax time came, I was even more a wreck. Not because I didn’t have the money to pay the royalties or the taxes, but because I just stunk at bookkeeping and the like. I had to scramble to get all my facts and figures together and it was just no fun at all. So, to the chagrin of myself, as well as a number of fans and authors, I eventually shut 7R down several years back.

Then, last year, David Golemon came to me with a proposition. He wanted to break into the indie publishing world as so many successful traditionally-published have done in recent years. He wanted more control of his material. He wanted more flexibility. He wanted more revenue for each book of his that sold. These are the hallmarks of indie publishing and from his time with 7R, he’d learned it all too well. And he wanted me to help him.

It took a few months of pondering. A few months of soul-searching. A few pros and cons lists, but eventually, I decided to join up and Quoth Publications was born! I came up with a game plan…one that would eliminate the issues I had with 7R. Recruited a bookkeeper, editors, marketing gurus, etc., to help ease the burden and know this is going to blow the doors off the old publishing company.

‘Quoth’ was David’s idea, but I loved it. It’s from Edgar Allen Poe’s The Raven. It incites dread. Brings images of dark things and battles between good vs. evil. And Quoth was envisioned to harbor that very idea in its books. Thrillers. Mysteries. Adventure. These are the things that Quoth will bring to the reading public. And I’m happy to announce that our first two books are only weeks away!

28168053_1843557452611234_5117461458636653493_nOur first book is scheduled for release on June 12. It’s David L. Golemon’s 13th EVENT Group book, Empire of the Dragon, which is already available for pre-order wherever ebooks are sold. It’ll be released in both ebook and print, and whether you’re a long time fan of the series or just starting out, I’m pretty sure you’re going to love the thrill ride David is going to give you in this read. Here’s a product description of the book for you:

230 B.C. – The first sovereign emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang, has consolidated his ultimate power with battles against the last of the dissenting tribes of China. With one last province to take, he knows he will be pitted against the one man he fears—his mysterious half-brother, Li Zhang, leader of a peaceful province to the north. The new Emperor’s goal was to murder Li Zhang for the secrets he has kept from the world that would give Qin Shi Huang the power to strike beyond the borders of ancient China. The power over earth, water, fire, and air. After a fierce battle by the Great Wall of China, Li Zhang used the powers of Air Bending to escape with his many villages into the expansive and brutal Gobi Desert. There, Li Zhang and his nation will vanish from the histories of not only the First Emperor, but of China itself.

Present Day – The world’s warring governments have simultaneously discovered deposits of an extra-terrestrial ore within the borders of Mongolia. This amazing mineral has been found to have properties that if processed correctly, has the potential to send men far beyond our own solar system using only a fraction of the material as fuel. The age of faster than light travel is now within the world’s grasp.

Enter Department 5656, the secret U.S. Government agency known to only a handful as the Event Group, as they are called upon to join this expedition when it is learned that the recent and brutal nemesis they discovered as having control over a blinded Russian nation, is leading the search for the newest of elements that will send mankind beyond the stars.

Join Colonel Jack Collins, Carl Everett, and Director Niles Compton, and the rest of the Event Group staff, as they attempt to discover the true mystery of what lies beneath the Gobi.

Skies will explode, oceans of sand will rise, and ancient seas from the bowels of the Earth will be called upon to protect the greatest secret in all of China—The legend of Empire of the Dragon.

Sounds great, right? Well, that’s not all!

dwo OFFICIALThe other book I wanted to share was my own whodunnit murder mystery, Death Warmed Over (A Grim Days Mystery), which will be released on July 10! I’m really excited about this one and can honestly say, I think it’s my best book yet. It’s got a fantastic mystery, lots of humor, some supernatural elements, and one of my favorite fictional protagonists (Silas Mot/The Grim Reaper) I’ve ever created.

Here’s the book’s description:

Becca Cole is a big fish in a small pond. The former big-city homicide detective is now the Chief of Police in Summer Haven, a sleepy Florida beach town where nothing ever happens. But all that changes when she is summoned to the scene of a grisly murder. A naked young woman lies dead on the beach, a knife sticking out of her back, and the supposed killer stands over the body. It looks like an open-and-shut case, but not all is as it seems.

The victim, who was tangled up in Santeria and drug-trafficking, didn’t die from a stab wound. In fact, an autopsy can’t determine what killed her. The chief suspect turns out to be Silas Mot, an enigma in his own right. In fact, as Becca digs deeper into Silas’s identity, she discovers the startling truth. He’s the Grim Reaper. The personification of Death. The guy who decides who dies and when. It seems he’s in town in order to determine why unsanctioned deaths have been occurring in and around Summer Haven, and he can’t leave until he’s cracked the case.

Becca and Silas will have to team up to discover who killed the young woman if they are to put a stop to the unscheduled departures, but for Silas, confined to a body of flesh and blood for the first time in his existence, the distractions of the world of the living may be the Death of him!

David Golemon called the book, “A deviously fun cross between TV’s Castle and Gaiman’s American Gods.” Though I’m humbled by the comparison, as a fan of both Richard Castle and Neil Gaiman, I’m kind of stoked!

23844411_1800203626946617_154733644603282835_nSo, yeah. In the next couple of months, Quoth Publications will be releasing it’s first two books. We’re pretty excited about that! But that’s not all. David is hard at work on a sci-fi space opera trilogy called Arizona Rising! The first book in the trilogy should be released later this year, though we don’t have a firm date on that yet.

And I’m already hard at work on book two of the Grim Days Mysteries, which is called Death Men Tell No Tales. I’m also working on book two of the Ajax Clean Forensic Thriller series, entitled Clean Slate, AND a stand alone historical mystery thriller called Run Joe, Run!  I’m hoping that I can have either Death Men Tell No Tales or Clean Slate ready by Christmas of this year.

So, some of you might be saying, “Tell me more about Quoth!” You might be an author interested in publishing through us or a reader who just wants to keep up with the awesome stuff coming your way. Well, first of all, our website (which looks awesome, by the way, thanks to the amazing Nick Thacker) is currently under construction and should be up and running soon. Once that’s up, you’ll be able to keep up to date with all our latest releases (we’ll even have a newsletter you can sign up for that will offer great discount deals, giveaways, etc).

As for you authors, yes. We’ll be opening the door to submissions. David and I have a passion for giving new and up-and-coming authors a great opportunity to get published. However, before you start sending your queries my way, let me start by saying that open submissions is still a ways in the future. At first, submissions (which I hope to start in early 2019) will be reserved by invitation only. We want to do this so we can curate and excellent stable of authors and the best books possible. After we have a solid footing in the publishing terrain, we’ll be opening the doors to everyone, so stay tuned! And I hope you’re as excited as we are!

  1. I read all of Mr. Golemon’s Event series and was pleased to note that you both are opening this new company. I, however, have an “evil” intent: I am a freelancer in business since 1989 looking to expand. The vast majority of my experience is in fiction. The company has copy editing, proofreading, and indexing services. Would be most interested in doing business with your new company. All references can be supplied.
